A larval host plant for the Common Buckeye butterfly, with tall, narrow flower spikes that bloom from the bottom up over a long summer season, drawing bees and butterflies throughout. Extremely drought tolerant, deer-resistant, and rabbit-resistant, it makes an excellent vertical accent and a native substitute for the non-native Verbena bonariensis often used in cut-flower and pollinator gardens.
