A versatile native that performs equally well in sun or shade, offering rare height and structure to a shady border. Purplish-blue flowers bloom in spikes for weeks in mid to late summer, drawing bumblebees and other pollinators. It's a larval host to several moth species, and once the flowers fade, the two-part seed capsules leave behind small scoop-shaped structures that add lovely textural interest into fall. Drought tolerant and one of the better choices for dry shade, it also holds up well against deer and rabbits thanks to its bitter-tasting foliage.
