A larval host plant for numerous skipper butterflies, including the Dusted Skipper, Crossline Skipper, and Ottoe Skipper, plus the Common Wood-Nymph. Blue-green summer foliage turns a striking copper-orange in fall and holds that color through winter, adding structure and movement to the border while helping keep neighboring perennial flowers from flopping. Female bumblebee queens also overwinter at the base of bunch grasses like this one.
